Dr. Jean-Denis Docquier graduated in Biochemistry (University of Liège, Belgium) and was awarded his PhD in 2002. He currently is full professor of microbiology and clinical microbiology at the University of Siena (Italy), where he implemented several research projects in the field of antibiotic resistance. He is the author of >120 publications of international journals. He was the recipient of several scientific prizes (American Society for Microbiology, European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Académie Royale des Sciences de Belgique). He is inventor in 9 international patents and he was/is consultant for numerous biotech companies active in the development of innovative solutions for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections.
Research aims
Antibiotic resistance represents one of the most impelling medical challenge of the 21st century, already accounting for over 1.2 million deaths/year worldwide. This global issue jeopardizes the achievements of modern medicine (e. g., organ transplants, cancer treatments), as hospital-acquired infections caused by highly resistant bacteria are now common, prompting the WHO to identify critical priority pathogens (essentially carbapenem-resistant Gram-negatives) for the development of new antibiotics.
At the Associazione Culturale Federico II, we actively support research aiming at (1) a better understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms leading to the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant organisms and (2) the identification and characterization of novel antibacterial compounds showing activity on WHO critical priority pathogens and showing multi- or pan-drug resistance profiles
